Erotic Adventures of thee Hydrogen Terrors
LOAD 007  CD/LP

Their first record. Short economical, and kick ass. Has a certain sinister quality to it. Like the U-Men with attention span problems and crazier stories to tell.

The lineup:

Nick Atocha: drums
Guy Benoit: vocals, sax
Dan St. Jacques: bass
Matt White: guitar

Recorded by Jon Williams (Volcano Suns) in Vermont, it is an awesome document of a an insane man growing inside the body of a small child. Its an early document of a band (Von Ryan's Express) thats life was diverted by the free encounter of opening for the Boredoms AND the Bar-B-Q Killers. A grimy backbeat, scratchy guitars, and some cracker-jack drumming teamed up with Side-2 Funhouse horn squall.

Song titles:
1. Mime Time
2. Death By Butane
3. Roger
4. The Little Belgian
5. Knuckleheadhunter
6. Get Up and Go

Terror, Diplomacy and Public Relations
LOAD 010  CD/LP

Their second record. More developed than the first. Great songs, production values are GO!!

The lineup:

Nick Atocha: drums
Guy Benoit: vocals, sax
Chris Cook: bass
Matt White: guitar

"Terror, Diplomacy and Public Relations" is like watching a bully knock a giant down with a sweet punch. Its got screech in the guitars, bump in the bass, and snap in the drums. Its thoroughly a modern record.

The songs are wound up like a watch coil, and explode on impact. Topics addressed include one hit 1970 wonders Hackamore Brick, airline crashes in the Florida swamps, and gay bars. For some reason its got odd tape collages. This is the record to start with.

Song titles:
1. Mexico
2. Radio to Saturn Vs. Hackamore Brick
3. The Latin King
4. Superstar
5. Whiskey Terror
6. Code Name: Coed
6. Iced Coffee
7. Earth vs. thee Hydrogen Terrors
8. Sissy Bar
9. All Hail the Panamanian Subversive
10. All Andy Warhol Weekend
11. Casino Night
12. Plate in My Head
13. The Enemy Mancini

History

Let there be no mistake about it, Thee Hydrogen Terrors are a rock band. One, two, maybe three chords. Consisting of Nick Atocha, drums; Matt White, guitar; Chris Cook, bass; and Guy Benoit, sax and vocals, they summon up some spooky ass sounds that touch the primal surge of the evil rock beast while still giving you that sexy feel of your first time.

The band stretches out on the new Load Records release Terror, Diplomacy, and Public Relations with some of the urgency of the records the band listens to like the Stooges, the Creation, and the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band. Its set to the backdrop of saxaphone squall, fuzz base, wall of sound guitar and story style vocal stylings of cinema-phile Guy Benoit. A lot of the songs deal with plane crashes, people with plates in their head, bike seats. You understand, uh...adult subject matter brought to the level of a child. This isn't lazy boy strumming.

Thee Hydrogen Terrors have a previous album on Load Records, "The Erotic Adventures of Thee Hydrogen Terrors" and this record features the same lineup except Dan St. Jacques plays bass instead of Chris Cook. This record is shorter, the songs are a little faster, its a little dirtier, and it is amazing. You not owning this is wrong. The album came out in the spring of 1995. The band toured the U.S., getting as far as Texas, Chicago, and other outpost locations. They toured with fellow Providence residents, the Laurels.

In between the two records, Dan left the band (he has another band Landed who have an imminent Load 7" -Dairy 4 Dinner. He also plays bass on the amazingly raw Olneyville Sound System CD (Load 015). Chris Cook replaced him. The second record was recorded at Tom Buckland's studio, a warehouse (Fort Thunder), and a Cambridge radio station WMBR. The band toured numerous times for this record, going out for a month with Six Finger Satellite. People were amazed at the band. They toured the East Coast a few times, but eventually broke up. Guy moved to Los Angelas and Chris still lives here in Providence. Nick Atocha and Matt White moved to Manhattan and Brooklyn respectively.

The band was formed out of the ashes of Von Ryan Express, a Stooges fueled freak band that had the wire frames that formed the Terrors sound. This band confused all who came in contact with them in the years 1992 through 1994. That was good. Again no lonely-boy strumming, just evil ranting above churning guitars fueled by a Motown style backbeat.

Providence has a substantial freak rock, and rockin' rock scene that owes a lot to this band, and their records are a good lesson to a world short on rock.
